The ice cream tycoons at Salt and Straw will double their presence in the Bay Area, adding new locations for their quirky, fresh flavors in Burlingame (at 1309 Burlingame Avenue) and Palo Alto (at 250 University Avenue). Both locations of the Portland-founded business will open in the fall.
San Francisco’s first Salt and Straw location opened in Pac Heights in April 2017, and has been generating steady lines since then, with customers tasting their way through eccentric offerings like green apple mayo sherbet and olive oil lemon custard. Owners/cousins Kim and Tyler Malek opened a second SF location, in Hayes Valley, last October. In total, they operate 14 locations across the West Coast.
As their company grows, Salt and Straw seeks to root itself further in its local markets. To do that, Tyler Malek, who is Salt and Straw’s head ice cream maker, plans to launch a new line of Bay Area specific flavors. Those will include options like Sightglass Coffee Cashew Praline, Organic Roots Arbequina Olive Oil, Dandelion Chocolate hazelnut cookies and cream, and Cowgirl Creamery Mt. Tam cheese with Acme Bread and sour cherry jam. They’ll come out in July ahead of the new locations.
