SF restaurants that almost made Bill Addison’s California 38
Eater’s roving critic Bill Addison ate his way through the Golden State for this enormous guide to eating in California, creating a California Essential 38 list along the way. The competition was fierce (obviously, because California’s the best) so not every amazing restaurant made the cut. (38 can feel like a small number when presented with the entire state.) Check out Bill’s “almosts” which included Kin Khao, State Bird Provisions, Mourad, and Californios, here.
Bay Area talent highlighted by the SF Chronicle
The Chron has released its yearly class of rising star chefs. This year includes a very talented crew, including Nite Yun (Nyum Bai), Christa Chase (Tartine Manufactory), Francis Ang (Pinoy Heritage), and more. Read the full lineup with bios here.
Store clerk assaulted over smoked oysters and beef jerky

According to SFPD, the attempted robbery occurred at 8:30 a.m. on July 11; the woman was arrested and booked on attempted robbery and suspicion of assault. No details were provided on whether smoked oysters and beef jerky were a successful pairing.
Curio adds a Southern-ish brunch to the Mission’s morning lineup
Seafood and burgers are now available at brunch at the Chapel’s new sister spot, Curio. On the menu: seafood towers, burgers, shrimp and grits, and a fried chicken benedict with jalapeño hollandaise to help shake off those hangovers. There’s also frosé, and an entire menu of cocktails designed for day-drinking. Check it out here.
