No munchies in Chinatown
Legal marijuana? You can forget it in Chinatown. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors, led by area supervisor Aaron Peskin, voted yesterday 8-3 to approve an ordinance that blocks the sale of recreational cannabis in the neighborhood, whose Chinese American community has been largely opposed to a dispensary in their midst for reasons including fears of gentrification and general cultural aversion.
CNN to air Parts Unknown episode with East Bay’s W. Kamau Bell
Episodes of the late Anthony Bourdain’s television show Parts Unknown will air posthumously on CNN, the network has announced. The last episode completed in the series before the host’s death was a trip to Kenya with fellow CNN star and East Bay local W. Kamau Bell. The network hasn’t said when the final season of the show will air.
Hawaiian chef’s cubano at Media Noche
The latest installment in cubano counter Media Noche’s guest chef series is here, and it’s from Chris Yang of Dogpatch Hawaiian restaurant āina. His ”Ono Kine Cubano” is made with crispy kalua pork, furikake slaw, kimchee vinaigrette, and mac salad aioli on sweet brioche — griddled to perfection by Media Noche chef Casey Rebecca Nunes. 10 percent of proceeds from its purchase will benefit Hui Aloha Aina Momona, an Oahu based organization promoting the traditional Hawaii foodway for poi.
Aster moves to longer fixed menu
Chef Brett Cooper is expanding his tasting menu at his 2015-opened, vegetable-starring Mission District restaurant. The new menu at Aster, which the kitchen is subbing in today, is seven courses rather than four, and it’s $135 plus an optional $79 wine pairing.
