Smokin’ Woods BBQ Moves to 2nd Half Sports Lounge

The Oakland pop-up has a permanent brick-and-mortar in the works

The massive, fuchsia-rimmed beef ribs from Smokin’ Woods BBQ have found a new home with the opening of 2nd Half Sports Lounge at 4307 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland’s Temescal district.

As first reported by the East Bay Express, James Woodard’s acclaimed barbecue operation moved out of its Forage Kitchen space earlier this month to focus on catering, the new 2nd Half pop-up, and the build-out for its first brick-and-mortar restaurant and sports bar, which should come to an unnamed downtown Oakland location in 2019. At 2nd Half, Smokin’ Woods serves an expanded version of the Forage Kitchen menu, though it maintains its focus on Texas-style meats with optional sauce on the side.

The development adds to a string of restaurants popping up inside sports bars, such as Likha at Hometown Heroes and the Lumpia Company in Mad Oak.

Previously a Friday-only, always-sold-out-early special at Smokin’ Woods BBQ’s cafe inside Forage Kitchen, the beef ribs are available at the new iteration on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.
