Jones, but more
Tenderloin bar and restaurant Jones is getting a refresh via Bay Area drag performer Juanita MORE! The space at 620 Jones St., with its trio of bars and distinctive indoor-outdoor layout, will become MORE!jones, a Latin-Mediterranean restaurant helmed by chef Cory Armenta (Hecho, The Catamount) in collaboration with food stylist Cole Church. More told SF Weekly that she hopes to be in the kitchen, but you can also expect her to be working the floor in drag on some nights, too. The new menu features the likes of “French-style carnitas” with ricotta, chicken livers, and seafood salpicon. Look for the transformation Tuesday, Sept. 4.
Outer Orbit, the Mission’s new pinball bar and Hawaiian restaurant, opens today at 3215 Mission Street. Chef Sam DeCamp (Gibson, Finn Town) is behind Outer Orbit’s festive menu — think surf n turf loco moco and lomi lomi guacamole. Beer stars at the bar with 12 brews on tap.
Closure near Union Square
Cafe Bread and Cocoa closed last week after at least a decade in business at 199 Sutter Street, showing once again that the neighborhood around Union Square is increasingly tough on small mom-and-pops. The business made the announcement on Facebook: “Saying goodbye to Bread and Cocoa and a 30-year career in foodservice. Saying hello to a new life.”
California weighs in on kids’ meals
Earlier this week, the legislature passed the first statewide bill of its kind in the country focusing on what kids drink in restaurants. The bill mandates that restaurants make water and milk the default beverage options — in other words, if a kid wants a sugary soda, a parent must request it. New York City, Hawaii, and Vermont are poised to follow suit.
