The end of an era
At the end of the month, Balboa Cafe’s Mill Valley location will permanently close to due a dispute with the landlord. It’s become a common story in the Bay Area, as explosive rents put an even greater strain on landlord-tenant relationships. The original Balboa Cafe, one of San Francisco’s oldest restaurants at 105 years old, will remain open.
Sliver Pizza expands
Berkeley mini-chain Sliver Pizza will open its first Oakland location this weekend at 5132 Broadway, Suite C-102, the former Pieology space in the Ridge Shopping Center in Rockridge. Sliver specializes in serving one vegetarian pizza and one salad each day, and the new spot will also have a large outdoor patio primed for hosting live music.
Fish taco alert
Temescal favorite Cholita Linda is closed for renovations through the end of the week, but fans of Cholita’s fried fish tacos and other pan-Latin fare who just can’t wait can head to the restaurant’s new outpost in downtown Alameda at 1337 Park Street.
Dinner at a historic mansion
This fall, San Francisco’s Payne Mansion is set to transform into the Mansion on Sutter Hotel, which will house a new French-inspired restaurant, 1881. The chef will be Jean-Paul Peluffo, who was most recently at French-Vietnamese restaurant Le Colonial.
