Big City Beer
City Beer Store, which rode — and helped fuel — a wave of interest in local beer over the last decade, has completed its move to a larger space nearby its original subterranean digs in SoMa. Owners Craig and Beth Wathen are now open at 1148 Mission Street, where they’re in the former Coachman space (and have a full kitchen). They’re still putting on the finishing touches on the space, including hanging their sign over their new courtyard.
Mayor Breed dines at Che Fico
Western Addition native and SF mayor London Breed hit up the area’s buzziest restaurant, Che Fico, for dinner last night, chef David Nayfeld writes. “She is also an absolute pro because she had dinner then had the forethought to order pie from Theorita for her team for the next day.”
SF’s favorite gay sports bar opens in LA
Castro LGBT sports bar Hi Tops is now a twin: A second Hi Tops has opened in West Hollywood, bringing with it the gourmet stadium-style food that’s been a hit in SF — plus some new items like grain bowls for the WeHo crowd. The owners are the same, and this location has a massive patio — something the SF spot lacks.
Heavy Metal whiskey
Bay Area rockers Metallica are getting into branded spirits, working with master distiller Dave Pickerell to produce a “blackened American whiskey.” They even played heavy metal sound waves it as part of the distilling process, to do whatever that does: The liquor was “housed in black brandy barrels and inundated with low hertz sound waves so intense that it actually enhances the molecular interaction and ultimately the finish of the whiskey.”
