Lefty O’Doul’s, reborn
After more than 50 years of serving San Franciscans corned beef and pastrami sandwiches, Lefty O’Doul’s closed in 2017 following a dispute between the operator and the landlord. Now, Lefty’s 2.0 is here: Lefty’s Ballpark Buffet & Cafe is open at 145 Jefferson Street, Suite 400, in the former Rainforest Cafe space in Fisherman’s Wharf. At roughly five times the size of the old Lefty O’Doul’s, the new Lefty’s sports a buffet format for a mix of new items and old recipes, and is positively decked out in local sports memorabilia. The owners teased on Facebook that, perhaps, a 3.0 is coming, too: “We know a lot of you will miss the original. Eventually we will find a more suitable location to rebuild a replica of the iconic restaurant and piano bar you all grew fond of.”
Pregnancy discrimination lawsuit
SF Chronicle published a feature on the ways restaurants are becoming more conducive to the needs of employees who are also parents. It also contained an update on Vanessa Scott-Allen’s lawsuit against the Thomas Keller Restaurant Group, which alleges that Scott-Allen was prevented from working at the French Laundry due to her pregnancy. Apparently, Scott-Allen does not want to settle out of court — instead, she wants to expose the restaurant group and raise awareness in the industry. The trial date has been set for May 28, 2019.
