Spam and eggs and more
The Mission’s Outer Orbit has added brunch service — and there’s plenty of Spam to go around. Chef Sam DeCamp is riffing on island favorites like macadamia nut pancakes (Outer Orbit’s are Dutch style with marinaded pineapple) and loco moco (one version with prawns and smoked lamb breast in addition to the requisite runny egg and gravy). Other dishes are mainland classics reimagined with Hawaiian touches, like eggs benedict (with grilled Spam and pickled pineapple on soft Hawaiian rolls) and chicken and waffles (karaage with chewy mochi waffles and matcha sugar). Peep the full menu below.
Dim sum in the Mission
A nontraditional dim sum restaurant is headed for 3224 22nd Street. Called Pushcart Fare, the upcoming spot will serve a mix of subtle plays on dim sum classics and more original offerings, such as mu shu tacos and fried chicken with caramel corn.
A new IPA every month
Starting Monday, October 1, Speakeasy Ales & Lagers will roll out a new IPA every month under its new Hunters Point Fresh Series. These beers will be available only on draft and exclusively in San Francisco bars and restaurants. The inaugural release, Admiral Haze, is a juicy, tropical IPA using local malt from Alameda’s Admiral Maltings.
A revamped cafe in Oakland
After a two-month hiatus, Rockridge neighborhood cafe Spasso has reopened as a non-profit with a new focus: the arts. New owners renovated and redesigned the space, adding splashes of vibrant teal, and will be unveiling a food menu soon in addition to more community events. Read all about the new vision on Berkeleyside.
