A taste of the past
While Russian Hill favorite Stones Throw closed on January 1, the restaurant is popping up in a new format at Civic Center’s Corridor. Starting tomorrow, fans will find classic Stones Throw dishes at Corridor every Saturday for brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., as prepared by the reunited Stones Throw team of chef Robin Song and pastry chef Tara Lewis. Fans will find Stones Throw’s staple puffed potato and eggs as well as new dishes available a la carte at the bar. Or folks can order the familiar prix-fixe, which starts with a selection of breads or chicken liver mousse and concludes with Lewis’s beignets. The mains include options such as a buttery huckleberry pancake, fried chicken with gravy, and Stones Throw’s burger. See the full menu below.
Wage left allegations at a popular string of taquerias
Gordo Taqueria is paying $690,000 to settle a class action lawsuit. Current and former employees have accused the owners of wage theft, including not receiving overtime pay and legally required breaks. The owners also allegedly only distributed tips a few times per year as opposed at the end of every day. The owners of Gordo, who run five restaurants across San Francisco, Berkeley, and Albany, dispute the allegations.
Chinese desserts to the island city
Alameda has a new place to feast on Hong Kong-style desserts like mango pomelo sago, black sesame soup with glutinous rice balls, and durian pudding. SweetHoney Dessert is now open at Alameda South Shore Center (523 South Shore Center Way), next to Bed Bath & Beyond. The Colma-born chain has seven other Bay Area locations, in addition to more in Southern California and even Canada. The first San Francisco cafe is also on its way.
Tacro reminder
The third location of Vive La Tarte opens in Noe Valley tomorrow, January 26, with Belgian-inspired treats, coffee courtesy of Sightglass, wine, and a kids menu. It takes over the former Bliss Bar space at 4026 24th Street — and yes, its highly Instagrammable taco-croissant hybrids will be in tow.
