Brown Sugar Kitchen Celebration Begins, But New Restaurant Won’t Open for Weeks

Rumors are swirling that Brown Sugar Kitchen’s new flagship location in Uptown, Oakland will finally open next week. Chef-owner Tanya Holland, however, confirms that the soul food restaurant isn’t quite ready yet.

The confusion stems from a joint ceremonial ribbon cutting for the 2295 Broadway restaurant on Tuesday, January 15 with neighboring McMullen Boutique. It’s been planned for a while. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf will be in attendance. And while McMullen is already open, Brown Sugar Kitchen is still awaiting permits.

“I really wanted to open on the 15th because that’s the day I opened on Mandela Parkway 11 years ago, so I thought it would be great karmically,” Holland tells Eater SF. “I don’t even know what my permit situation will be by that time.”

Fans of Holland’s fried chicken and waffles will have to wait a little longer — stayed tuned as the opening approaches.
