Longstanding Mission Dive Bar Has Served Its Last Pizza and Pitcher

Jay’n Bee Club and its building are for sale

Jay’n Bee Club, a classic Mission District bar with no nonsense and surprisingly great East Coast-style pizza, is for sale along with its two-story mixed-use building at 2736 20th Street. Mission Local broke the sad news for fans — and what’s worse, the bar’s already closed.

Bar and building owners Steve Benazzo and Mike Perry are selling both Jay’n Bee, which they closed a few weeks ago to assess their options, and the building that houses it. The building hasn’t officially hit the market, but a “for sale” sign is up, Mission Local reports.

Benazzo and Perry wager that another bar and restaurant operator could take over the business side — but they’re out after more than 20 years running the place. Eater SF has reached out for comment and hopes to hear back.

Marked by its semi-functional, fully beautiful neon sign and a convenient patio, Jay’n Bee has weathered many years at the corner of 20th and York. In an episode of “Check, Please!” on KQED from 2008, Benazzo estimated the bar was already 50 years old. At the time, it served Mexican food rather than thin-crust pizza.

While Jay’n Bee was a club in name, membership requirements were hardly strict. “We’re pretty much everybody’s bar,” Benazzo said on the episode.

Stay tuned for updates on the future of the space.
