After first bringing ice cream-stuffed doughnuts to Potrero Hill in 2017, Milkbomb Ice Cream is set to expand across the bridge for the first time. It’s opening a second shop at 2079 University Avenue in downtown Berkeley.
The new location used to belong to Ici Ice Cream, the beloved creamery with a fine dining pedigree that closed both of its Berkeley locations in November. Milkbomb’s announcement arrives at around the same time as the news that San Francisco-born Humphry Slocombe is coming to Berkeley — also in a former Ici Ice Cream location.
Milkbomb specializes in bombastic ice cream doughnut sandwiches, loaded with toppings like cereal, candy, condensed milk, and toasted marshmallow. Folks can also order ice cream straight-up in a cup, flavored cone, or as a milkshake, in creative flavors such as ube, red bean, and horchata.
Milkbomb will face some immediate competition in the East Bay: I Scream Donuts is expected to open in March in the former Tara’s Organic Ice Cream shop in Oakland’s Temescal, also with ice cream-stuffed doughnuts in town.
No word yet on an opening date, but this is likely not the last we’ll see of Milkbomb’s expansion efforts. It’s already planning to open multiple stores in Arizona.
