Square Pie Guys Open Detroit-Style Pizza Shop in SoMa on July 16

It’s a happy ending — or beginning, really — when pop-ups gain enough follows (or investors) to earn a permanent restaurant. One of SF’s newest is Square Pie Guys, the Destroit-style pizza powerhouse from Marc Schechter and Danny Stoller that’s been growing steadily for just under a year. They’ll open at 1077 Mission Street on July 16 with square pies, burgers, wings, and more indulgent, cheesy fare.

After time spent sharing the kitchen at Divsadero’s Vinyl Cafe, the pair’s crispy-crusted creations will have ample room in the former home of the Board. It’s the latest in a wave of the square pies, with the recent opening of fellow Detroit-style pizzerias like Cellarmaker House of Pizza and Pizza Squared.

The pies range from simple — the 6x8 is red sauce with exactly 48 pepperonis — to inventive, like the chicken Caesar pie with garlic ricotta cream, grilled chicken thights, cherry tomatos, shredded kale and romaine, green goddess Caesar dressing, and grana. The summer elote corn (clearly a seasonal pie) is topped with that garlic ricotta cream, plus roasted local corn, cotija, taco seasoning, cherry tomato, and cilantro-lime crema for a mash-up of flavors and cuisines on a pillowy bed of dough.

All in all there are about 10 pizza varieties including a build-your-own option, plus items like a burger, salads, and sandwiches. Beer and wine will be available for dine-in customers, and Square Pie Guys will offer delivery and catering, too.
