An Expanded Cheese Board Will Bring More Dairy to Berkeley

A changing of the guard at Tartine Manufactory

Nicolas (Nico) Peña is taking charge of the Mission’s hit Tartine-run restaurant, Tartine Manufactory, working as chef de cuisine and replacing Christa Chase, who’s now working on a forthcoming queer- and woman-owned restaurant, Friends and Family. Before helping to open Tartine’s new Outer Sunset location, Peña was the purchasing manager for Quince, Cotogna, and Verjus. He’s also worked locally at Nightbird and Rich Table.

A bigger board

Berkeley’s beloved cheesemonger and pizza slice shop Cheese Board Collective is expanding its footprint. The worker-owned collective, which currently has 60 members, is uniting the 1500 and 1504 Shattuck Avenue spaces, adding new products, “a reimagined cheese counter, more grab-and-go items, and more room for customers” a representative tells Berkeleyside. Stay tuned for more as the enlarged Cheese Board arrives in late spring or summer 2020.

Ike’s opens with Google sandwich in Mountain View

Sandwich artist Ike Shehadeh’s growing chain of shops, known for their longwinded names and lists of ingredients, is now serving its sandwiches in Mountain View. The address is 1020 N Rengstorff Avenue, and a new, Google-specific sandwich for the company’s hometown is called “Larry Page & I Have The Same Birthday, So Basically I Invented Google Too.” It’s made with roast beef, pepper jack cheese, and foxfire sauce.

Small electrical fire at Alamo Drafthouse

An electrical fire at the Mission’s Alamo Drafthouse dine-in movie theater lead to a brief evacuation and closure this week. Refunds for those who missed their shows are being offered.
