Bay Area Diners: How Much Are You Tipping Right Now?

New, 2 comments

How much are you tipping these days for sit-down meals, takeout orders, or delivery? Take the poll

Let’s face it: In an equitable system, folks who work in restaurants and bars would be paid a living wage, and wouldn’t have to rely on the largesse of customers to determine how much they’ll take home after a day of slinging plates and serving patrons.

The fickle nature of tipping feels even more unsettling during the pandemic, as the people who bring us food are, quite literally, risking their lives to do so. They’ve also taken on additional duties like temperature-taker, mask cop, and more, all while facing nasty Yelp reviews from patrons who say they feel “anxious” or “uncomfortable” when asked to comply with state or local health orders.

The Bay Area is now seven full months into the pandemic, and though things are arguably closer to “normal,” with the advent of reduced-capacity dining indoors for almost every county, we’re still nowhere near the dining world we lived in back in January. What we’re trying to figure out is how the events of the last seven months have changed your tipping habits (assuming that they have).

Please drop your answers in the polls below before Wednesday October 21, and if you have additional thoughts to add, we’d love to hear them via email at sf@eater.com.
