Good News: Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous Ice Cream Shop Isn’t Disappearing From Dogpatch

The fave flavors will stay the same, and there are promises of pie

Ice cream fans screamed when they spotted a sign in the window of Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous, the neighborhood scoop shop of the Dogpatch with a dedicated following after 11 years of candied violet and chocolate malted crunch. But Eater SF is relieved to confirm that Mr. and Mrs. isn’t closing — it’s changing owners. Annabelle Topacio is handing over the keys to Deuki Hong, which means Mr. and Mrs. is officially joining the Sunday Family, as the fourth restaurant in the expanding group, which already includes Sunday at the Museum (2018), Sunday Gather (2019), and Sunday Bakeshop (2021).

A tipster spotted pastry chef and owner Annabelle Topacio hanging a sign in the shop window a few weeks ago, which shared she’s moving out of San Francisco and heading up to Washington state. “My daughter and I are so appreciative, grateful, and thankful beyond measure for all of your support these past years, you have given us an unforgettable memory to take with us of our beloved Dogpatch neighborhood,” Topacio wrote. The pandemic might not have helped matters, but really, after a decade of churning, Topacio simply needed a change.

Hong says when he first heard about these plans, his whole team had a strong gut reaction. “The question for us, as her friends and fans, was, ‘Oh, but your ice cream!’” Hong says. Which led to a conversation: “Hey, can we continue your traditions?” The team is excited to continue providing the ice cream flavors that the neighborhood already knows and loves. And Mr. and Mrs. felt like a great fit for the Sunday Family, which is known for chill neighborhood hangouts, from Hawaiian barbecue to Asian American cookies.

Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous is open right now, and there are no plans to shutter during the transition. The Sunday Family team already stepped in on Wednesday, August 4, and Hong says pastry chef Elaine Lau has been working closely with Topacio, who is passing on her recipes. If anything, they’ve expanded hours slightly, and are now open from Thursday to Sunday, noon to 7 p.m. (The one thing about Mr. and Mrs. was the tantalizingly short hours, which occasionally disappointed late-afternoon cravings.)

But without the namesake Mrs. in the kitchen, the ice cream shop is going to get a new name: it will officially relaunch as Sunday Social sometime in October. Hong promises a seasonal rotation of 10 ice cream flavors, including the popular sweet corn, white rabbit, and frozen hot chocolate. The group will be expanding the menu slightly with pie, cookies, brownies, and espresso; it will also introduce chef collaborations and neighborhood suggestions, so regulars will have a shot at picking the flavor of the month.

In the meantime, expect minor touch-ups to the space, including fresh signs and a new mural, but “nothing crazy.” Stay tuned for more sweet details.
