One of the Bay Area dining scene’s most poorly kept secrets has been that many of the most exciting restaurants aren’t opening in San Francisco anymore. Instead they’re opening in the East Bay — all over Oakland and Berkeley, certainly, but also in places like Richmond and San Leandro. The truth is, this side of the Bay is jam-packed with excellent restaurants, from high-end tasting menus to cash-only taquerias.
We’re once again updating the East Bay 38, our always evolving list of the area’s most excellent restaurants. As with the SF 38, every few months we add newly eligible restaurants (since candidates must be open at least six months to be considered), or restaurants that we’ve newly discovered, or that have recently stepped up their game.
Joining the list for this June 2021 update: Horn Barbecue, Tacos Oscar, Mago, and Range Life. Coming off for now: New Dumpling, Tacos el Tucan, Bluebird Pizza, and Noodles Pho Me.
The latest CDC guidance for vaccinated diners during the COVID-19 outbreak is here; dining out still carries risks for unvaccinated diners and workers. Please be aware of changing local rules, and check individual restaurant websites for any additional restrictions such as mask requirements. Find a local vaccination site here.Read More
