That means there are plenty of places in Oakland and Berkeley dedicated to playing home team games as well as the NFL, Premier League soccer, NCAA college football, and much more.

These 10 sports bars in the East Bay give you a communal place to watch the game, drink beer, and chow down — and scream at the referees, obviously.

For watching games on the other side of the bridge, here’s SF’s best sports bars.

Hometown Heroes

The East Bay branch of Hometown Heroes reps Oakland with Warriors and Athletics gear on the walls and games on the screens. It’s a little small and you can’t see the TVs well from the spacious patio, but Hometown Heroes makes up for it with its festive cocktails like the Rickey Henderson (rum, blue curacao, pineapple) and elevated Filipino food via the pop-up Likha.

Mad Oak Bar

One of the East Bay’s only rooftop bars, Mad Oak draws regulars for its large patio, deck, rotating food pop-ups, full bar, and 40 brews on draft. It’s a great spot to watch a game casually, with several TVs on mute — that is, except for major sporting events, such as a Warriors playoff game, in which case you can expect the sound on and everyone wearing blue and gold.

The Athletic Club Oakland

With two floors, 40 screens, and 20 distinct sound zones, The Athletic Club is Oakland’s most serious sports bar. Following in the San Francisco location’s footsteps, the Oakland bar offers serious comfort in a variety of bar, booth, or dining table settings — and you can reserve your seats in advance of a big game. There’s also a full bar, a large food menu — including various ballpark dogs — and an up-to-date schedule on its website.

George & Walt's

Rockridge’s classic and friendly neighborhood bar is a laidback, no-frills spot to watch sports, with about a dozen TVs, a full bar, affordable drinks, and basic bar grub. There aren’t any other places quite like it in the otherwise upscale neighborhood.

Fort Green

From the same team behind The Miranda and Drexl, Fort Green is a jazzed up sports bar in an art deco building in Old Oakland. Choose from retro cocktails, boozy slushies, beers by the bucket, wine, and Ferraris on tap, alongside snacks or pizza. If you’re actually not so into watching the game, Fort Green also supplies shuffle board, Hoop Fever, and board games.

Pappy's Grill & Sports Bar

Named after former UC Berkeley football coach Pappy Waldorf, Pappy’s Grill & Sports Bar is the destination for cheering on Cal sports with rowdy fans. It has two full bars, 16 beers on tap, 15 TVs, and a giant, 205-inch HD projection screen, so everyone will definitely be able to see the game. Pappy’s also serves burgers, sandwiches, and salads all day.

2nd Half Sports Lounge

With its reclaimed wood paneling, rustic finishes, and plenty of natural light, 2nd Half Sports Lounge doesn’t look like many other sports bars in the East Bay. It’s a little more elevated, but it maintains the sports bar essentials: several TVs, a full bar, and comfortable seating. In addition to a big, Southern-inflected food menu, 2nd Half also hosts Smokin’ Woods BBQ on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Halftime Sports Bar

This downtown Oakland sports bar offers ample seating, 10 TVs, a full bar, and basic eats in a dark, nightclubby setting. This is the spot for watching games with a hip-hop soundtrack, conveniently located near BART.

Grand Oaks | Restaurant & Sports Lounge

One of the oldest sports bars on this list, Grand Oaks opened in 1988 and retains an old school, locals’ hangout vibe. While you can certainly grab a pint and a burger here, this is also the only sports bar on this list where you can order escargot and a ribeye steak while you watch the game.

Bobby G's Pizzeria

This Berkeley pizza shop lines the walls with TVs so you can watch the game from wherever you’re sitting. There’s only beer and wine available, but the beer selection — with about a dozen taps — is very local and very solid. Split a New York-style pizza or pan-fried brunch pizza while you watch Sunday morning football. Bobby G’s updates its online calendar with the games it will screen.
