9 Snappy Hot Dogs in San Francisco

These top dogs are so much more than a ballpark treat

View as Map

Move over, burgers: Hot dogs may technically be cylindrical tubes of meat, but they are some of the best treats available to modern man. Truly, there are few greater pleasures than snapping into a plump hot dog in the summertime (or anytime, really), especially when it's topped with goodies like bonito-rosemary aioli.

And although the Bay Area isn't exactly known for its standout hot dog stash, there are still some great options out there. Check out these nine spots to enjoy some winning wieners around town.

The newest hot dog addition in San Francisco is, okay, technically a Korean corn dog shop. The crispy, crunchy meat on a stick comes rolled in cheese, potato, ramen, or panko, and is drizzled in such delicacies as spicy mayo or ranch dressing. Yeah, you can get boba tea or dalgona coffee with that. Order online to pick up or get delivery through a few different apps.

Behold the “Prog Dog,” the off-menu treat that’s now officially on the takeout menu at the Progress. It’s a double-smoked pork hot dog with bonito-rosemary aioli, kimchi, and toasted sesame on a grilled milk bun. It’s a delight on its own, but when paired with the very excellent house martini with rosemary oil and a smoked Castelvetrano olive, it’s sublime. Order online to pick up or reserve for outdoor dining.

Berliner Berliner

Rosamunde broke hearts when it shuttered its location on Haight, known for handing sausages to hungry drinkers at the Toronado bar next door. But fortunately, longtime employee Christine Blunck took over the space. She renamed the sausage spot Berliner Berliner, and she’s now serving German, Polish, Hungarian, and other assorted links, topped with peppers, kraut, and more. Walk in for takeout.

SF brewery Black Hammer, like everybody else, knows dogs and beer belong together, so they’re serving them both at their new-ish indoor German beer garden in the Castro. Tried and true Rosamunde is providing the sausages, and Black Hammer’s SoMa brewing facility is turning out a whole host of German style beers. Order online for pick up or delivery, or call 628-222-4664 to reserve outdoor dining.

Noe Valley’s cute neighborhood burger counter also flips good dogs — those would be Niman ranch beef, split and griddled on the flattop, either served straight up or Chicago style. Order online for pick up or delivery.

Is a hot dog a sausage? Is a sausage a hot dog? Who cares. Rosamunde has an extensive menu of cylindrical meats, from knockwurst to wild boar, all served on a bun with toppings like grilled onions, sauerkraut, or mango chutney. Add a craft beer and some potato salad and never look back. Order online for pick up or delivery.

Gott's Roadside

Gott’s Roadside is known for its burgers, but it has also a seriously solid Niman Ranch hot dog on the menu as well. Load it up with all the toppings, add fries, and do not — repeat do not — fail to order a cone of swirly soft serve for dessert. Order online for pick up or delivery, or walk in for outdoor dining.

4505 has spread the hot dog love across the Bay Area. Snap into a 4505 hot dog at the source on Divisadero, where it’s served simply on a bun with pickles, or seek it out at their new Oakland destination — appropriately the former home of Glenn’s hot dogs. Order online for pick up or delivery.

Berkeley students have been chowing down on Top Dog for decades, and it's no surprise that the classic dog haven’s original location is still going strong. A variety of dogs and sausages like the Calabrese, made with pork, paprika, fennel, and chili will take care of munchies or good old fashioned lunch with panache. Order online or call (510) 843-7250 for pick up or delivery.
