But which pies are worthy of both your time and taste buds? We've rounded up a list of the Bay's most delicious pies, whether you're longing for creamy pumpkin and toasty pecans or are more into wild matcha custards and dark chocolate layers.

Bi-Rite Market

SF’s favorite boutique grocery sources beautiful produce from local farms, and their pies are a cut above the usual options on the bakery aisle. For Thanksgiving, they stock up on pumpkin, pecan, apple, and a chocolate bourbon mousse situation that looks serious.

Stonemill Matcha

From hand-whisked matcha drinks to savory items like a killer katsu sandwich and salmon matchazuke, Stonemill does everything just right (and with lots of matcha). Not to be missed on the sweets menu: A matcha cream pie, with a flaky, buttery crust and a filling that’s not too sweet and packed with green tea flavor.

Black Jet Baking Co.

Bernal Heights’ neighborhood bakery rocks old-fashioned treats, including seriously buttery Pop Tarts, which are filled with jam or Nutella. That same tender, flaky, pastry is also shaped into whole pies, including apple with a crumb topping, apple with a double crust, and dark chocolate sunk into the pecans during the festive months of the year.

Tartine Manufactory

Tartine has a reputation for its banana cream tart, which has a crust that’s just as dark-golden and distinctly layered as its award-winning croissants. But the award-winning bakery also rolls out pumpkin and apple options in November, at both the Manufactory and the original bakery on Guerrero.

Grand Opening

Pastry chef Melissa Chou helped Mister Jiu’s earn its first Michelin star, but these days, she’s gone from plating beautiful desserts at the end of a meal to throwing open her own bakery window. Grand Opening is a regular weekly pop-up at Mister Jiu’s in Chinatown, where the star menu item is the burnt honey pie, with wild honey in the custard, beeswax cream swishes on top, and a sprinkle of fennel pollen. She usually has four different pies on the menu, in addition to cakes and other pastries, which can be ordered whole or mixed-and-matched in a slice box.

Yvonne's Southern Sweets

Self-taught baker Yvonne Hines drew inspiration from her grandmother’s recipes to create this tiny mom-and-pop pie shop that doles out thick, luscious slices of sweet potato and pecan.

Lois the Pie Queen

This tried-and-true Southern kitchen has been serving up staples like chicken and waffles for nearly 70 years. Everything at the Oakland venue is made from scratch, including the beloved lemon ice box pie, which arrives with a tart lemon filling enveloped by buttery crust and adorned with a dollop of whipped cream. And the Thanksgiving offerings include sweet potato, along with nearly a dozen flavors.

Sweet Adeline Bakeshop

Pie savant Joyce Goldstein’s neighborhood bakeshop Sweet Adeline makes its pies with a sampling of fruits from the Berkeley Farmer’s Market, which means flavors like cranberry-pear and brown butter pecan will always be bursting with fresh, local flavor. However, its best pie may be the one without any fruit at all. The chocolate cream pie is a luscious, cocoa-rich confection piled high with house-made whipped cream.

Crixa Cakes

At Berkeley bakeshop Crixa Cakes, the pies are known for their signature deep-dish, soft butter crust. Make sure to stop by during sour cherry season: For only a few weeks each year the bakery serves up its seasonal cherub pie, a sweet-and-sour cherry and rhubarb medley served up by the slice. But this time of year, the pumpkin pie is also exceptionally deep.

Edith’s Pie

Edith’s Pie is a pie pop-up with regular weekend pickups in both Oakland and San Francisco. Mike Raskin moved from Chicago to the Bay in 2019 and got busy baking for Thanksgiving, but by popular demand, he’s now spinning pies year round, with a brick-and-mortar bakery on the way and pickups now in Oakland. About half a dozen seasonal flavors swap out week to week, from the popular pumpkin spice latte to savory hand pies.

Gregory's Gourmet Desserts

Gregory’s calls itself an underground bakery (maybe because it’s literally in a basement) but its fans don’t mind, lining up for cheesecake, cobbler, and pie. The peach cobbler is saucy, spiked with cinnamon, and topped with shortbread. Its key lime pie, in a graham cracker crust, is ultra creamy and smooth.

Bakesale Betty

Bakesale Betty is best known for fried chicken sandwiches, and it’s also known for strawberry shortcake, but when the pandemic hit, it got into the pie game. The shop is taking a break from pies for the 2022 Thanksgiving holiday, but generally rotates in apple, pumpkin, pecan pies, and more — just check ahead for what’s on deck.

Pie Society

Star pastry chef Angela Pinkerton launched a sweet new pie pop-up at the start of the pandemic, inspired by her grandmother’s orchards — and dedication to butter. Get those Thanksgiving preorders while they’re hot, for pumpkin made from fresh and flavorful kuri and kabocha squashes; apple-cranberry topped with streusel; and an intoxicating mix of pecans, walnuts, bourbon, and dark chocolate. There are regular weekly pickups at locations in both Berkeley and Dolores Deluxe in San Francisco.

Ono Bakehouse

Ono Bakehouse is known for its Hawaiian treats, particularly the malasadas and Queen Emma cake, but it’s also worth mentioning the haupia pie. Try the chocolate haupia pie, which is just as dreamy as the ones you may have had on the islands, or the sweet potato version, both available in individual 4-inch portions — perfect for not sharing, make everyone else buy their own.

Pietisserie at City Center Bishop Ranch

Pietisserie had to shut down its storefront during the pandemic, but baker Jaynelle St Jean is still producing her aesthetically pleasing and delicious pies, which are available for pickup at numerous locations — such as City Center Bishop Ranch in San Ramon — as well as though nationwide shipping. The raspberry chocolate and pumpkin chocolate pies are particularly striking, with that nearly black dark chocolate crust. Herringbone lattice tops and ultraviolet ube are also so cool, and the citrus custards sing out particularly creamy and tart.
