Where to Order Food for Passover This Year

A sit-down Passover seder at a Bay Area restaurant is no longer an option, but there’s still plenty of to-go matzo ball soup and brisket to be had

2020 isn’t going to be the year for a big seder dinner with the extended family, or for a gathering around the table with 10 or 12 friends, as shelter-in-place guidelines and good sense demand that this year, Bay Area Passover observances remain small, household affairs.

For folks looking to ease the work of preparation (or just cut down on trips to the grocery store) several restaurants in Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco are instead offering Passover specials for takeout or delivery. Some are selling all-inclusive seder kits that even come with the candles and the flower arrangements, while others are making just one or two special items to supplement your own home-cooked feast. This list shows some of the best Bay Area Passover takeout options available for this year’s celebration of the holiday, which can still be joyful and celebratory even as we shelter in place.

Among its many other plaudits, Italian hot spot Che Fico has gotten a fair amount of buzz for the spotlight it’s placed on hard-to-find Roman Jewish dishes. So it’s no surprise that chef David Nayfeld would offer a special to-go Passover dinner on April 8: braised lamb shanks with couscous, plus other traditional Passover flavors (TBD) for the appetizer and dessert courses. The $50 family meal, meant to serve two to three people, is part of the chef’s ongoing free meals initiative — though those who can afford to pay for the dinners should do so.
