Where to Order Food for Passover This Year

A sit-down Passover seder at a Bay Area restaurant is no longer an option, but there’s still plenty of to-go matzo ball soup and brisket to be had

2020 isn’t going to be the year for a big seder dinner with the extended family, or for a gathering around the table with 10 or 12 friends, as shelter-in-place guidelines and good sense demand that this year, Bay Area Passover observances remain small, household affairs.

For folks looking to ease the work of preparation (or just cut down on trips to the grocery store) several restaurants in Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco are instead offering Passover specials for takeout or delivery. Some are selling all-inclusive seder kits that even come with the candles and the flower arrangements, while others are making just one or two special items to supplement your own home-cooked feast. This list shows some of the best Bay Area Passover takeout options available for this year’s celebration of the holiday, which can still be joyful and celebratory even as we shelter in place.

Che Fico

Among its many other plaudits, Italian hot spot Che Fico has gotten a fair amount of buzz for the spotlight it’s placed on hard-to-find Roman Jewish dishes. So it’s no surprise that chef David Nayfeld would offer a special to-go Passover dinner on April 8: braised lamb shanks with couscous, plus other traditional Passover flavors (TBD) for the appetizer and dessert courses. The $50 family meal, meant to serve two to three people, is part of the chef’s ongoing free meals initiative — though those who can afford to pay for the dinners should do so.

The Castro tapas bar is offering a four-course Passover menu for pickup or delivery for $49, with optional wine pairings at an additional cost. The meal, which includes matzo ball soup, matzo brei, roast duck breast, and chocolate-almond macaroon cake, will be available from April 7 to 16.

The Cal-Italian icon famously hosts a big Passover seder feast in the Mission every year. This year that tradition will have to be broken, as the restaurant is temporarily closed during the COVID-19 crisis, but fans of owners Craig and Annie Stoll’s legendary matzo ball soup can take heart: They’re selling quart and half-gallon containers of the soup as a to-go item on April 7 and 8, available for pickup and delivery. The deadline to pre-order is April 6.

Wise Sons Jewish Delicatessen

The popular new-school Jewish deli has one of the most extensive slates of Passover offerings, running the gamut from a full seder kit (which, at $196, even includes the Shabbat candles, along with a 2.5-pound brisket) to individual items like potato kugel and housemade gefilte fish. The Passover menu is available for takeout and delivery orders between April 7 and April 16; East Bay customers can arrange for pickup at Beauty’s Bagel Shop on April 8, noon–3 p.m. only.

All of the Oren’s Hummus locations are offering a prix-fixe seder dinner ($75, or $29 for kids) for pickup or delivery on April 8, with a la carte items like brisket and matzo ball soup and even flower arrangements. The deadline to put in your pre-order is 5 p.m. on April 5.
